Plakias is a superb resort situated on the
southwest coast of Crete. Surrounded
by mountains to the north and the
Libyan Sea to the south, the area
is predominated by a beautiful
curved sandy beach.

At the end of this beach is the village of Plakias
with a small picturesque harbour, traditional Greek restaurants, and vibrant taverna bars and cafes.

Plakias is a former fishing harbour town which has developed over the last few decades into a tourist resort.

The local people are friendly and hospitable. They continue to live their traditions and customs and love their Cretan music and dances.

In the numerous restaurants of Plakias, you can enjoy the finest traditional Cretan cuisine, which is based on fresh and local products and of course the ubiquitous olive oil.

Rest assured that Plakias is a welcoming, friendly and safe place to live, as indeed is the whole of the island.

In the surrounding area you will find a number of other superb beaches, there are no less than six, including one of the most famous attractions in Greece, Preveli. Nearby, scattered on the mountain slopes and in the valley there are six other Greek villages. Of these Myrthios provides a splendid panoramic view of the area.

With the need to serve the growing number of visitors to Plakias, newer and safer roads have been constructed and now connect the main cities to the north and south of the island. The harbour has been reinforced and the streets around the village and across the long beach have been decorated with lights, and with small parks and gardens created next to them. The beaches are cleaned everyday, as are the streets.

The water sanitation system has been modernised with the latest biological equipment, keeping the beach one of the cleanest in the Med. Many new restaurants have been created and the older ones are regulated to the highest health and environment standards. Modern bars and nightclubs also comply with noise regulations.

The village is built along a single street, which runs along the clean 1.3km long sandy beach. If you follow this street to the small harbour, you can a enjoy boat ride to several other beaches. There are some wonderful walks, through the olive groves and hills beyond.

Plakias is located in southern Crete about 30 minutes drive or 35km south of Rethymnon. It is 90km from Channia and 110km from Heraklion.

There are other breath-taking beaches in and near Plakias at Damnoni, Amoudi and Mikro Amoudi, which is also a naturists' beach. A little further away are Lefkogia and Schinaria, the preferred beach of scuba divers. Preveli is also a well known tourist spot with its natural beauty. The date palms stand along the bank of the river which flows down through the Kourtaliotis gorge (you have to drive up the gorge to get to Plakias), creating an exotic scene. Wander along the paths in the palm forest, relax in the shade of the trees and have a dip in the river.

	A new harbour is currently under construction in Souda 2km west of Plakias Town. The European Redevelopment Fund has provided 75% of the finance for this 5 million Euro project with completion expected in 2009. This harbour will compliment the existing fishing harbour in Plakias town and allow larger boats to be moored in the area.
